DNEL Derivation

In view of the preparation of the 4th amendment to the Directive 2004/37/EC, the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive (CMD), scheduled in 2019, the European Commission has issued a mandate to RAC to review and evaluate the information already available as well as to assess the most recent scientific information on nickel and its compounds, in order to provide an opinion on Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) for nickel and its compounds by 26 March 2018.

These requests are made in accordance with Article 77 (3) (c) of REACH and the opinion shall serve as basis for the future setting of binding OELs for nickel compounds under the CMD, where it will be considered according to the normal Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) procedures.

The Nickel Institute, as Secretariat of the Nickel REACH Consortia, has provided RAC with a Background document in support of long-term Inhalable DNELs for Nickel Metal and Nickel Compounds, which currently serves as basis for the derivation of workplace DNELs in the REACH dossiers (Appendix C2 to the Chemical Safety Reports, dated April 2017).
